Emma is a local foods guru, having served as both intern and President of the board at Local Foods Connection.  She strives to value “real” food in her daily life by growing, cooking, eating, and sharing lovingly-prepared meals.  Her particular style of keeping food real typically entails filling the kitchen sink with unwieldy quantities of home-grown basil and tomatoes, or destroying her new couch during a session of cherry-pitting (which is almost always done in the living room during some kind of TV marathon).  Her absolute certainty of the importance of real food to human prosperity is rooted in a personal and historical understanding of a more antiquated way of eating: family gardens, heirloom seeds, home preservation (with little regard for the USDA’s guidelines, mind you!), and knowing the name and face of the animals who provide us with meat, eggs, and milk.

She lives, works, and gardens in Iowa City, Iowa, where she lives with her dog and her fiance.  Brunch is long her favorite meal, although work and other demands have whittled it down to a fried egg on Sundays as of late.  She is delighted to have an invitation to contribute to this blog and community, as an excuse to rekindle the love of brunch and weekend morning socialization in her life.
